The term “thicc” has exploded onto the social scene as a mainstream descriptor for women of a certain body type. But which body type, where and how did the term originate, and who, exactly, is thicc? It can be a little confusing if you don’t have your ear to the streets, so let this pretty cool white dad from the ‘burbs explain and get you caught up.
Back at it again, keeping you all informed about the latest and greatest in American pop culture and helping you keep your street cred on the up and up. Today we’re digging into a term that you have definitely seen hit the TL a time or two recently: thicc.
Thicc, derived from the English word “thick,” is a term used to describe a woman of a curvaceous physique, usually one with wide-set hips, thick thighs, and a big ass butt. Though it may be unsettling for some women to be described this way, the term is intended to be complimentary, as women of this nature are commonly sexually desirable. The most common usage of “thicc” is preceded by the adjective “lowkey,” as in “damn that bitch lowkey thicc.” “Lowkey,” also accepted pop cultural vernacular, basically means understated.
Examples of ways to use “thicc” in a sentence:
• I’m tryna switch my schedule up because the new English teacher lowkey thicc. Your boy wants to sit front row and learn about prepositions and shit.
• Have you guys seen pictures of the girl Darren hooked up with over winter break? I don’t know how he pulled it off, man. She hella thicc.
• Yo did you see Cathy yesterday watering her hydrangeas in yoga pants? Ayyye she stupid thicc.
• The main reason I voted for Hillary is because she lowkey thicc in those pant suits.
A couple examples of incorrect ways to use “thicc” can be found below.
Notice how the Twitter user is using thicc as the literal interpretation of the word “thick,” which does not work here. Plots cannot thiccen, but they can thicken. It makes sense. Thicc is only meant to describe thick women.
The Origin of “Thicc”
The term dates back to the mid-2000s, with its earliest occurrence on the internet appearing on a website for hip-hop artists on November 4, 2004. The excerpt is below.
“aiigh mayne, don’t even hate on this n*gga. I don’t give a shit wha y’all say, he thicc and sexy. Meenah feel me on this shit. N*gga look like a football player, and das wha I love. Y’all know how n*ggas be trippin’ bout thicc girlz? It’s our turn.”
That’s beautiful.
The term wasn’t popularized, however, until much later. The year 2015 would prove to be thicc’s, as it would become a cultural phenomenon. By mid-2015, “thicc” was becoming a widely used slang term in an ironic, humorous manner. People were thicc. Objects were thicc. Cartoon characters were thicccccccc. Every damn thing was thicc. The two below tweets from early on were influential in bringing the term mainstream.
Here’s another good one from August of 2016.
Look at the water molecule. The hydrogen and oxygens look like a big ole fat ass busting out of a red swimsuit. It’s thicc as hell..
Thank you Dillon for continuing to drop knowledge on the people
Let all of us that follow Will pray that The Chainsmokers never release a song called thicc
This is bound to happen, all of our feeds will pay for it, and sup?
As a white Dad from the burbs this was extremely helpful and insightful. God bless.
Know who else is getting thicc? Defries. Seriously his girlfriend better hang on tight or she’ll soon find that Will isn’t the only cuck in that relationship
As a black male, I’d like to say this is the worst possible interpretation of the word “thicc”.
Dillon strives to be accepted by the brothas, so I know this comment has him shook.
This is very accurate
In all seriousness I’d like to hear your interpretation. I am intrigued
Let’s hear it then
I remember back in college when “thick” meant a girl you hooked up with who wasn’t quite fat, but definitely not skinny… not anything new
Using cc instead of ck actually originated from the crips. Because the bloods and other rival gangs like to use the acronym ck or “crip killer” the crips change all ck’s to cc’s in their words to avoid the acronym.
Underrated comment. I was really hoping someone was going to point this out.
it can’t be used for everything…like some writers on the site use it.
This is my favorite personal use of thicc recently (note the 0 likes 0 RTs, I am getting some serious #engagement on my #content) https://twitter.com/JayJayerJayest/status/826243631023521798
You know our podcast gonna thicc
This was poorly thought out
Great account idea and picture though
Is there an angle or a joke here I’m not getting?
