The New York City Taxi wars have officially heated to a boiling point, and I think Uber just popped the motherfucking lid off the pot.
Uber sent out an email today announcing that they have dropped UberX fares by 20%, making them “cheaper than a New York City taxi,” according to a post on Uber’s blog.
For example, and trust me, they give examples:
A NYC Taxi from Williamsburg, Brooklyn to the East Village (because the L train is broken, no doubt) would cost $16. With UberX’s old prices, that would be $19. Now it’s $15 with UberX.
A NYC Taxi from NoLIta (North of Little Italy) to Lincoln Center (let’s say 64th and Broadway) would cost $22. UberX would be $26, but now it’s 20.
To go downtown from Grand Central Station to the Financial District, that’d be $24 in a NYC taxi. UberX would have charged you a whopping $28, now it’s $22. Of course, you could take the Subway from Grand Central to the FiDi for $2.50 and it would probably be much faster, what with traffic and all, but that’s not the point.
This is a major breakthrough for Uber, but at the end of the post, they remind us New Yorkers that these fares are only temporary. In what could almost be called a warning, Uber says, “These prices are only in effect for a limited time. The more you ride, the more likely we can keep them this low!”
They also claim that this will be better for their drivers in the long run because it will lead to increased demand, lower pickup times and more trips per hour. How this will affect NYC Transit and Taxi Services and fares remains to be seen.
Me, I’ll stick to the Subway. Unless I’m hammered and I have no idea where the hell I am, let alone how to get back to the N/Q train.
