Late night television icon David Letterman will announce on his show tonight that he will be retiring from hosting “The Late Show with David Letterman” on CBS, after a 34-year career in 2015.
Dave started at NBC in 1980 on a short-lived morning program The David Letterman Show after his multiple appearances as a guest and guest host on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. He went on to host Late Night with David Letterman in February of 1982, which followed Carson at 12:30 and was a commercial and critical success, winning 5 Emmy awards and a Peabody in 1991.
Dave moved to CBS to host The Late Show in 1993 after Carson’s retirement in 1992. His closest contemporary and Carson’s Tonight Show successor, Jay Leno, retired earlier this year, with Jimmy Fallon taking over for him.
Dave has done almost 6,000 shows, over 4,000 of them at CBS.
No word on his successor at this time, but it’s interesting to note that former Late Show writer Louis CK’s name is currently trending on twitter when you search for Dave.
