Alzheimer’s is one of those diseases that doesn’t get a lot of recognition. Sure, we know about it. Sure, we care about it. But it’s rare that we ever hear about it. Alzheimer’s isn’t glamorous, it doesn’t get the recognition, the attention, or the notoriety that other life-threatening illnesses receive. It’s not cancer, it’s not MS, it’s not diabetes, it’s not heart disease…and so it’s left in the dust. Alzheimer’s is for old people. Alzheimer’s is for people who have already lived their lives. Alzheimer’s is for the sick, the decrepit, the nearly dying anyway.
…except that it’s not.
And in an effort to disprove these false beliefs and negative connotations that the disease carries, Seth Rogen visited the U.S. Capitol yesterday afternoon to speak on behalf of the illness. Setting aside his funny man persona, the actor delivered one of the greatest performances of his career: a speech before Congress on how Alzheimer’s has impacted his life. He spoke of his mother-in-law, how he watched her slowly succumb to the crippling disease. First it was funny, he admitted, little things like forgetting where she left her keys or wearing two different shoes, but then it took a turn for the worse. And that, Rogen claimed, is when he realized that the illness is no joke. At the age of 60-years-old, Rogen watched as his wife’s mother forgot who she was. Forgot who he was. Forgot who her daughter was. She can’t feed herself, can’t bathe herself, and can’t care for herself. Alzheimer’s is a grave disease. It is a deadly disease. It is a disease that needs to be taken seriously.
