It’s only a matter of time until an original SyFy movie is made about this. Yes, if you live in New York City, you’ve obviously encountered a cockroach or two in your day. Whether it was on the subway, in the street, or God help you, in your own home. Winter used to be your only recluse from these disgusting insects.
Now that’s all been shot to hell. Scientists have discovered a new, non-native species of cockroach in Manhattan’s west side. It’s scientific name is “Periplaneta japonica,” a name worthy of something this disgusting.
Adding to the terror, these things can endure the harsh cold temperatures of New England during the winter months and can survive in temperatures as low as 23-degrees Fahrenheit. The Zoological Society of Japan weighs in:
“In the temperature range from -5 to -8℃ [ 23 °F to 17 °F], a significant proportion of cockroaches could tolerate a 12 hr period of tissue freezing. The freeze tolerance capacity differed between nymphal instars, but the supercooling capacity was similar for all nymphs. In a freezing trial at -6 and -7℃, none of the first instar nymphs recovered after tissue freezing, whereas many mid (from 3rd to 5th) and final (8th) instar nymphs survived freezing. “
I’m pretty sure this is exactly like the beginning of Starship Troopers. It’s certainly a similar scenario. I’m pretty sure we’ll soon be seeing footage like this from local NYC news stations:
I can’t imagine this thing will survive much longer in the snow, but our thoughts go out to all of those in New York City until then.
