I have a theory that for white collar jobs, if you compare the occupational quality to amount of work travel, you can come up with a sort of inverse bell curve.
On the crappiest jobs, you have to travel a whole lot and basically only get paid in airline miles. Traveling salespeople and those that have to frequent trade shows fall into this category. In the thicc middle of the mediocre jobs, you get to be more sedentary. Maybe you just get an office, shut the door and turn out the lights for a solid 36 hours. You’re not low enough on the totem pole to get sent around the country or world, but you also don’t have the paycheck that reflects the responsibility of leading the charge. Then once you get to the C-suite, you have to travel a bunch but it’s worth it.
It might be wrong, it was just something I was thinking about in a two hour Uber ride I took the other day, because yet another work flight of mine got cancelled. I am a very unlucky business traveler.
For a while, I kind of kept it to myself because everyone has those work horror stories. Heck, one of my friends was in LAX when that guy shot up the baggage area a few years back, and she was flying from Hong Kong to New York (she missed her connection). But last week, after yet another cancellation, I had enough. “This tears it!” I said to myself while riding a Reagan Airport shuttle bus.
Let’s just go over my last two years. Flight to Denver cancelled, rerouted through St. Louis, where I spent the night. Flight to Chicago cancelled. Flight to Chicago diverted, landed in Indianapolis, drove. Flight to Washington, D.C. cancelled. Flight to San Francisco diverted to Phoenix, delayed about half a day. Flight from New York cancelled, forced to stay an extra night. Flight from Washington, D.C. cancelled, took a cab to Baltimore in order to get home that night.
Now here’s the thing, I’m no stranger to travel woes. I understand that stuff happens. But there’s a pretty big difference between spending a little extra time on your vacation and not being able to get home when you don’t want to be in that place to begin with.
But what am I to do? I can’t sit around and just wait for bad shit to happen. Last time I almost missed a date with Producer Micah in the Grandex Labs studio (PS, y’all should subscribe to Grandex Labs). On the other hand, I need to know what I’m getting into when I pick a fight with fate and luck.
Do I need an amulet? Am I to sacrifice something? Are there shamans and/or fairies that I should make friends with? These are all questions I have. I don’t really know how to proceed, I just know something needs to change. .
you need lounge access is what you need
The earlier the flight, the less likely it will be delayed. Although, you may have no control over this (i.e. the HR overlords book your company travel)
Worst deal ever ^ they always book a 7pm so you have to work a full day then fly out for work
I’m currently on a streak where 12 of my last 16 flights have been delayed or cancelled.
I think my percentage is still higher.
While not a cancellation, I did have a guy die on my flight a few weeks ago
When my brother travels alone, 100% of the time, his flight gets delayed.
Hey Peter man
Yeah… yeah.
Almost ended up in Madison, WI on a rebook (thx Delta) with just the clothing on my back last Friday, on top of spending ~5 hours on various LGA tarmacS. Still not over it.
We need to make a sacrifice to the airport gods. With how bad the weather has been and all the cancellations, I’ve barely been able to get to and from work these last couple months.
