Well everyone, the fun is over. The holidays have passed, the new year has begun, and we are in that bleak two-to-three month period where it’s cold but there’s nothing exciting going on aside from, if you’re dating someone, Valentine’s Day. There is no worse time of year than this, and we have to weather this storm until March.
It really is a huge letdown after December when, even though it’s dark and cold, there’s still the excitement and fun of the holidays. You can sit inside drinking egg nog, stuffing your face with Christmas cookies, wrapping presents, watching holiday movies, and listening to your favorite holiday music. You can go see Christmas plays and musicals and go look at Christmas lights. There are holiday concerts and parties all over the place. It may be dark and cold, but there is so much fun and family involved that it makes it worth it. Not to mention the holiday days off and the time off for people using their PTO to go on trips and spend time with their families. Now that the holidays are over, it’s just dark and cold, and I for one cannot wait for spring.
This time of year also sucks because it’s an awful time for sports. September through the first week of January has college football, the greatest sport in America, and the NFL regular season (whether you are watching to cheer for your actual team or just your fantasy football team). You have to admit that this has been a hell of a season and the college football playoff was spectacular, and that’s coming from a Georgia alumnus mourning a heartbreaking loss in the National Championship. After all that excitement and all the close games, it’s a major letdown to know that the excitement is gone at least until the spring games in April. After the Super Bowl is over, football withdrawal will get really, really bad and, even worse, MLB spring training doesn’t start until the end of February and Opening Day isn’t until late March. And, let’s be honest, basketball is just an okay fill-in and doesn’t really get exciting until the NCAA tournament (until your bracket gets busted). It’s adequate entertainment, but it doesn’t really fill the void.
So what are we to do? It’s dark and cold. Football is over. Baseball isn’t here yet. The holidays are over. The big post-holiday letdown is devastating. And spring doesn’t start for three months. Unless you are a huge hockey or basketball fan, there are no real distractions from the work week. The only things I can think of are getting a jump start on your spring cleaning, working off your winter hibernation insulation at the gym, and focusing on work, none of which sound particularly fun, but are necessary evils. Maybe it’s for the best. No better time to get your shit together and gear up for the new year like living in a vacuum. A cold, dark, boring vacuum. My God. Spring, please for the love of all that is holy, hurry up..

Let’s call a spade a spade, Valentine’s Day blows. The next real holiday we have to look forward to is MDW.
…In four and a half months.
Easy there guy, let’s not forget about St. Patrick’s Day.
St. Pats day isn’t as fun anymore knowing how bad the hangover is going to be
At least it’s on a Saturday this year. Plenty of time to recover before work on Monday.
Dude, I’ve been getting the two day hangovers. Doesn’t mean I’ve stopped drinking, I just do it Friday night and then the rest of the weekend is ruined.
PGP st. Patrick’s day dublin meetup?
one of my best friends is getting married on St. Pattys. Hellooooo open bar
Fuck you’re right. Apologies for letting that one slip, brain still hasn’t rebooted from the weekend
I know most folks around the county don’t get to experience it, but Mardi Gras is right around the corner. I don’t get any time off of work for it, but those first two weekends in February have been eagerly anticipated for months. Easily my favorite holiday during the year.
Next real holiday is March 14 – Steak & Blow Job Day!
V-Day is crazy where I work(but that means overtime) but I’ve taken the wife to some nice spots and I get some nookie. Win-win.
The Winter Olympics is this year. Make a crockpot full of chili and have the boys over for some sweet-ass bobsledding!
Nah, it’s the beginning of ski season baby!
Heading to Vermont tomorrow! Killington and Sugarbush for the long weekend.
Heading up to Killington tomorrow myself, too funny man!
Wanted to try skiing this year. I live within a 20 minute drive of Four Lakes in IL, 30 from Villa Olivia, and an hour from Wilmot…
Then I broke my shoulder. PGP.
The first 3 months of the year definitely suck because it’s busy season. At least it’s much better now that I’m out of public accounting and can plan my own schedule rather than be at the whim of some overzealous 25 year old senior.
I envy you
If you’re still stuck in public accounting, switch over. The grass is 100,000,000% greener.
Can confirm – this will be my 2nd year in the non-profit realm (I work for a private operating foundation) after 4 years at a CPA firm. Glad I paid my dues early and got out with my mental and physical well-being still somewhat intact.
If the only thing I did in my spare time was watch sports I would probably hate this time of year too. Luckily there are books, booze, and board games!
Board games? Name checks out.
More like bored games amirite
You’ve clearly never felt the rush of building the longest road.
Settlers, Ticket to Ride, and RISK. Great time killer for 1Q… Even at work if you get the apps!
February is the worst month of the year. No football except for maybe an early super bowl, no baseball, no meaningful basketball, no open hunting seasons, still too cold to golf or fish….
This. Fuck February. There’s a reason it’s the shortest month of the year.
The first quarter of the year blows. Great take.
I’ve got MLK day off this monday
Of course a day off is better than not, but is a Monday in mid-January really that exciting?
Yes, a free 3 day weekend is that exciting
you’re just jealous
Meh. I get it as a floating holiday. Would rather use it on a spring Friday and hit the links. Then again, you are from Yuma, so you could probably get out and play in January.
I’m poor because of it but its this time of year that I’m glad I live in California. Come out and join the six figure ramen dinner club!
Spent December in Santa Monica and I can confirm that there are few better places to spend winter than California
It’s 68 and sunny in Austin right now. Just sayin’
