Last Friday, you said you’d stay in and by some small miracle you actually ignored all of those text messages from your friends begging you to come to the bar. Or maybe you parlayed a happy hour after work into drinks that didn’t stop until the early hours of Saturday morning.
It could be that you fell somewhere in between these two camps. I don’t know.
Now please let it be noted that I am fully aware of it only being Wednesday. The weekend feels like it’s a million miles away right now but I need you to keep this column in mind come Saturday morning.
A Saturday morning staple since Jewish Poles began migrating to this wonderful country, the bagel is a delicacy unlike any other.
It is, in this blogger’s opinion, the best breakfast option going, and there is no better day of the week to get a freshly toasted bagel than on Saturday morning. There’s just something about the ritual of it all that makes it better on a Saturday.
Maybe you work out beforehand and head to your favorite bagel spot in some athleisure that was actually used for its intended purpose. Or maybe you opted out of the gym this Saturday, choosing instead to shower and then walk over to that deli around the corner.
Whatever you did before arriving to order that iced coffee and an Everything bagel is irrelevant. The point is that you’re there right around 10:00 a.m.
There are many who will say that sleeping in on a Saturday is the way to do it. That getting ten or eleven hours of sleep after a long week in the cubes is what needs to be done to really recharge the old batteries. Not I.
To get the most out of a Saturday you need to be up before 9:00 a.m. which for most of you probably isn’t that monumental of a task even if you went out the night before.
Saturday mornings used to be a mystery to me. Something I read about in magazines and saw people partaking in on Instagram. An urban legend. In many ways, Saturday morning was like the boogeyman.
I had heard stories but never actually seen it with my own two eyes. The thought of waking up before noon on a Saturday merely three years ago would have been insane for me to even think about.
Now it’s a little different. I love waking up around 8:30 or 9:00 a.m. and it’s all because of the toasted bagel with cream cheese from a local deli or bagel shop. And make no mistake; it has to be from a local eatery.
I love making food at home just as much as the next guy, but part of this whole process is the walk to get that warm bagel wrapped in cellophane or tin foil. Don’t come at me with lox, red onions, and capers. While that’s a great order, it’s not what you need on Saturday morning. It’s all about that freshly toasted bagel with a schmear. Plain cream cheese is acceptable, but I usually go for something like a garlic or sriracha cream cheese.
Thrown in a brown bag, you can carry it back to your apartment and enjoy it from your living room while you sip that overpriced iced coffee you bought to accompany it. Headphones blasting some Steve Winwood or Phil Collins while the foliage slowly turns to shades of red, orange, and yellow. Absolutely phenomenal. I’m honestly welling up a little just thinking about how great the Saturday morning walks to my local bagel shop are going to be in a few short weeks.
You’re probably screaming something right now from your desk about essential duties that need to be performed on Saturdays. What about the errands! The chores! Just relax.
These errands and chores can wait. They more than likely consist of dry cleaning, a trip to the grocery store, and maybe, MAYBE, a pump at the gym if you’re feeling really ambitious. But these things don’t need to be done on a Saturday morning. That’s Sunday morning’s problem.
So before you crack that Saturday morning beer around 10:00 or 11:00 a.m. I need you to try this out, because it’s a ritual that I’ve adopted and am currently obsessed with.
It’s fun, it’s flirty, and it gets you out of the house on a Saturday before 10:00 a.m. By the time you finish that warm bagel, you’ll still have hours on top of hours to do whatever the hell you want. Football is right around the corner, and it wouldn’t it be nice to have something to do before the noon games kickoff this fall? I think the answer is yes. The world is your oyster on Saturday, but only after you’ve had a bagel with cream cheese. .

You ever had biscuits and gravy?
Nah, breakfast tacos though. C’mon 19th you’re better than this.
I’m eating biscuits and gravy over breakfast tacos 8 days a week
Also go to Pena’s Donut Heaven in Pearland and they have Killens Brisket and Eggs breakfast tacos btw its redonkulous
yeah it’s more of a sunday dish. also if we’re being honest b&g looks like throw up on a plate
Thoughts on breakfast burritos? Big fan.
I only respect people who have love for the breakfast burrito.
Okay guys, chill out.
And the breakfast burrito has seemingly endless amounts of stuff you can throw in it. I’m big on: green peppers and onions sauteed with a little butter, toss some sausage in the pan, then I’ll go beans if I’m feeling frisky. Roll it up, medium-hot salsa to dip onto each bite (extra points for hatch green chili salsa). Coffee, water, burrito, water, coffee, bathroom. In that order.
Call me old fashioned but I’m a fan of Saturday morning nookie
Maybe a post-coital blunt if productivity isn’t a concern for the day
Winner, winner. I like to take a few GB’s to the face then start my day, usually oblivious to the fact I’m hungover.
a FEW gb’s? Forget being oblivious to a hangover, I’m surprised you’re not oblivious to life at that point

While I always welcome a warm, toasted bagel at any time (asiago cheese ftw), I got up at 9 AM last Saturday to ride my bike to the farmer’s market and enjoyed some spectacular breakfast chorizo & egg chilaquiles. Heaven.
Chilaquiles are a top tier breakfast food
bacon egg cheese >>> cream cheese
True, but Taylor Ham > everything, though
Bagels are for the North. Having grown up in the Tri-state and now living in Texas for 8 years.
Breakfast Tacos are king.
I’m just going to say this: I always miss not being able to get even a half decent breakfast taco whenever I want. I never miss not being able to get a half decent bagel and cream cheese.
Breakfast tacos are GOAT.
all the choices in the world and you choose a bagel, what the hell?
Venison bacon, chopped coarse like hash. Three eggs over easy or fried but steamed to finish. Eggs on top the bacon with a few dashes of Chipotle Tobasco and a dollop of fresh salsa for each egg. Two slices of toast and coffee, black.
