Jon Favreau is a really interesting guy and I’m sure Disney did their homework before deciding that they’d let him do a remake of “The Lion King”. He started out as a sort of cult favorite with movies like Swingers and Made, and parlayed that into producing and directing. By the turn of the millennium he started doing more behind-the-scenes work and made two really great blockbuster movies in Iron Man and Iron Man 2. He was also a producer for The Jungle Book which, last time I checked, had like a 99% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
As an aside, he was also in this movie Chef which is fantastic and definitely slept on. Watch that one on Netflix if you haven’t already. Bottom line? He’s accomplished and I can’t blame Disney execs for thinking that this guy has the chops to take on a live-action remake of The Lion King. I just have a few questions before I’m fully sold on this.
What does “live-action” actually mean in this case? Because to me, live-action means that flesh-and-blood actors are replacing digital characters. So for the The Lion King are we going to get people dressed up as lions, hyenas, and warthogs? That sounds like something Hollywood would do in the 1950s because technology didn’t exist and having massive animals running around a set would be mayhem. Another important question: will this be as musically inclined as the original? Elton John made a couple heaters for the original and it’d be a crime to not, at the very least, include “The Circle Of Life” as well as someone doing a rendition of “Hakuna Matata.” Look, I know it sounds like I’m being a little picky but if you’re going to start doing remakes of classics you need to be able to answer the tough questions.
I guess I’ll just assume that “live-action” means digital animals getting produced in real areas of the African Savannah. The Lion King is my favorite Disney movie ever made, so don’t fuck this up, Favreau.

Chef is the most underrated movie on Netflix. Just a great feel good, Sunday afternoon movie.
Just watched it for the first time. Grade A Panic Room material.
This might’ve been the one Disney film they shouldn’t touch. Not sure how they can make it better than it already is, especially when there are no humans- wouldn’t a human version just be Hamlet?

Which would be entirely green screen and CGI… So not exactly live action…
They’re using live action in the context of realism vs cartoon, not entirely accurate but I didn’t choose the words.
The live action jungle book was intense and borderline frightening and the Lion King plot is WAY crazier / deadly than that. Suffice it to say I am extremely pumped for this.
But has he ever lived down keeping Drama out of Swingers?
I watched Easy and felt betrayed by your review so gonna have to think long and hard about watching Chef based on your recommendation.

This is probably true. I’m the kind of piece of shit who is upset an episode is predominantly in Spanish because I can’t have it on and look at my phone at the same time.
