The NBA Finals have ended. I felt like there wasn’t even a series played for the Stanley Cup this year. I was starting to get worried that I’d be forced to watch reruns of The Office until football started in August, but HBO has taken mercy on me. Thanks to the Home Box Office, we now have a riveting show to hold our attention through the slog that is summer programming. Sure, we’ll have the Olympics in Zika infested Rio, but I’m going to assume that nobody, deep down in their heart of hearts, really gives a flying fuck about the 800 meter men’s freestyle final.
Enter The Night Of, an eight episode fictional crime drama on HBO presented in the style of “Serial,” the hit podcast from Sarah Koenig and NPR. HBO released the first episode (which was two hours long) exclusively on HBO Now and HBOGO, and I’ve got to tell you I was terrified. Our protagonist is a teenager named Naz Khan, living just outside Manhattan with his mom, dad, and brother.
Naz is, for all intents and purposes, a nerd. He tutors basketball players at his school, and when he gets an unexpected invitation from one of them to go to a party on the Lower East Side, he is elated. His ride to the party falls through later on that night, though, so he steals his father’s cab on a whim. This single act- Naz’s decision to drive into New York City-sets off a chain of events that eventually leads to Naz’s arrest on suspicion of murder. John Turturro plays Naz’s attorney, and I can already tell from one episode that this is probably going to get him an Emmy. This show’s got it all. The detective who seems to be deviant in one way or another. The skilled lawyer. And most importantly, a very, very, dead girl.
This show is going to be a fucking whirlwind. HBO has a reputation for putting out quality criminal based programming (if you haven’t watched The Jinx, I highly recommend it) and The Night Of isn’t going to be any different. I was perspiring twenty minutes into the first episode and I’m already counting down the days until July 10 when the show will officially premiere on cable. This means I have to wait three weeks for a fresh episode, so if anyone has a series to hold my attention that isn’t called Game Of Thrones, hit me up.I won’t spoil the details of the show for you; just watch it. You will not be disappointed. .

I agree, looks like a solid true detective replacement
I’ve been waiting for this show since I saw a preview before GoT because it looks like the next great show in HBO’s next tv session. After my vacation in gonna watch it since I found out there free wifi isn’t the greatest here after watching GoT.

It looks really good, but I haven’t watched it yet. When it comes to really good shows not named GoT and not a sitcom, Sherlock and Peaky Blinders would get top marks from me.
Watched this Saturday night with the girlfriend. Great show, wish I didn’t need to wait 3 weeks to watch the next episode.
One problem with the plot. Why not just take the subway? Problem solved. At the worst, he gets robbed and assaulted and ends up in a hospital rather than jail.
I’ve never gotten anxiety from watching a show before, until I watched this last night. It’s going to be a great mini series.

Been pumped about this since I saw the preview a while back. Glad to hear that it’s already available/starting off well. I’m hoping it makes up for the debacle that was True Detective season 2 from last summer.
