Ankle strengthening should help with that issue. Write the alphabet in the air with your foot and it will stretch/strengthen your ankle where you shouldn’t experience that pain as much. Also, stretch your glutes. It’s all connected.
As a runner, I totally get all of these. I’m not going to try to sell you on running, that ship has obviously sailed. A phrase that applies to running and most everything else in life, “if it was easy, everyone would do it.”
