Thank God this is not in America or else we’d be hearing the battle cries of MSNBC and Al Sharpton right about now. The word “discrimination” gets tossed around a lot. Way too much, in fact. It’s used to describe every minor inconvenience some whiney moron faces in his or her daily life. However, let the records show that I believe we have finally found a case of true discrimination, only it happened in South Korea.
Katie Mulrennan is an Irish teacher who applied for a teaching gig in South Korea that she discovered on Craigslist. As every potential job applicant has experienced, she either expected to get no response or at least a somewhat appropriate rejection. Instead, she was basically told that the staffing agency’s client is not interested in Irish teachers because they get too fucked up.
That’s pretty rough. It’s the same as if Grandex refused to hire me because I’m from the southern United States and my mother and father may be siblings. It’s possible, sure, but it damn sure doesn’t affect my ability to produce shitty articles.
Thankfully, Katie has found another job already and has a damn good sense of humor.
From BBC News:
The English teacher has since found a job and said that she can laugh about what happened.
“I was annoyed about it. But I can also see it was a little bit hilarious as well. A friend saw it and encouraged me to post it online as it might go viral.
“I thought: ‘Really? It’s just another silly thing poking fun at Irish people’. But then I put it online and people started getting in touch.
“I still love the country and being in Seoul.”
Maybe Kim Jong-Un was onto something about the North being the best Korea. You surely don’t hear much discrimination coming from within those borders..
